Visible skin redness is an incredibly common, frustrating and often mysterious condition affecting millions of Americans and can be qualified into 2 major categories: acute redness and chronic redness. Acute redness appears quickly and dissipates quickly—and it includes sun exposure and even flushing. Over 33% of U.S. adults have reported having at least one sunburn episode over the past year. Chronic conditions such as rosacea or acne are often associated with chronic visible redness in the skin. Over 16 million Americans are affected by rosacea, not only physically but also emotionally and even occupationally. 70% of rosacea patients experience lower self-confidence, 41% avoid going in public or social engagements and 30% of severe rosacea sufferers have even missed work due to their condition!
How does my skin turn red? Acute skin damage, such as UV, chemical or physical insult or chronic skin damage caused by inflammatory conditions, such as rosacea and acne, leads to the body’s release of inflammatory mediators in the skin. This release leads to vasodilation, the dilation of the blood vessels and then ultimately, to visible redness. Visible skin redness is a complex problem both for physicians and for patients. The most common rosacea treatments, such as prescribed Rx products, treat the inflammatory component only and do not address the additional visible redness issue. There is a great need for a safe, effective topical to offer relief from visible redness.
Recent rosacea treatment options have been less than ideal and include trigger avoidance, improved barrier function, vasoconstrictors, antioxidants/anti- inflammatory agents, and light and laser- based treatment of capillaries and surgery. Trigger avoidance is often easier said than done! Emotional triggers cannot be avoided, and even a walk to the car can induce UV insult. Improving the barrier function protects skin from possible redness but does not actually address it, and the use of barrier- enhancing ingredients such as ceramides and niacinamide alone have not been effective.
Vasoconstrictors have been used to quickly reduce flushing by shrinking blood vessels but do not address the underlying cause. Caffeine and xanthine are common vasoconstrictors that offer short- lasting effect and come with a great chance of a rebound effect, where blood vessels eventually dilate to greater than normal size. Antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents have been used to control inflammation. Unfortunately, there is often a sensitivity component to visibly red skin, and antioxidants can be irritating for those patients. Additionally, for ingredients like corticosteroids, pyratin, coffee berry, etc, there is no data available on redness reduction. Steroids also run the risk of thinning the skin and causing a rebound effect. Finally, physicians almost always have to resort to light and laser- based treatments, such as IPL or PDL.
The ideal treatment for skin redness would be to attack the underlying cause, or to prevent the blood vessels from enlarging unnecessarily. Like floss and a toothbrush are to your oral hygiene, so is home skin care critical to the success of your healthy skin- but even more important for those of you suffering from chronic conditions, including those associated with visible redness.
